Pre-treatment Instructions:
- Shaving is the only acceptable method of hair removal six weeks prior to starting treatment and during the whole treatment period. Ideal hair length is comparable to a 5 O’ clock shadow.
- Failure to shave the treatment area may result in a $25 service fee and longer appointment time.
- A six-month washout period is required for all patients with history of oral isotretinoin (Accutane, Soriatane, Claravis, Amnesteem, Absorica, Zenatane, Myorisan, Sotret, etc.).
- A two-week washout period is required for all light or photosensitive medications during or prior to treatment. Check if any of your medications may cause photosensitivity with your prescribing provider or pharmacist.
- A four-day washout period is required for patients on topical tretinoin therapy (Atralin, Differin, Epiduo, Renova, Retin-A, Tazorac, Veltin, Ziana, etc.)
- Treatment area should be clean, dry and free makeup, creams, lotions, medications, or sunscreen.
- If you have/had a history of cold sores/herpes and we are treating that area, you may start oral medication the day before treatment and continue for five days after to prevent a recurrence.
Contraindication:
The laser is contraindicated for those patients who:
- are hypersensitive to light
- take medication which is known to increase sensitivity to sunlight
- take anticoagulants
- have seizure disorders triggered by light
- are pregnant
Treatment Expectations:
- Laser treatment may be uncomfortable (comparable to a rubber band snap) and a cooling device will be used with the laser to reduce skin damage.
- Redness and swelling may be seen in the treatment area immediately after treatment and may last a few hours to days. Sun exposure, skin products with fragrance or irritants may worsen the redness and swelling. Ice is rarely needed but may be used immediately and a few hours after treatment.
- Blistering may occur rarely in which case bacitracin or Neosporin should be applied. Call the office to report this side effect and further recommendations.
- Hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (white spots) in treatment area may be experienced and typically lasts three to six weeks. Avoid sun exposure for two weeks after treatment to reduce chance of hyperpigmentation. Use non-comedogenic sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) during the entire treatment time (4-8 sessions).
- Hair shedding in treated area is expected up to 21 days following treatment. This is often mistaken as new growth because hair appears darker. Do not pick or irritate treated area. Use an exfoliating sponge 4 days after treatment to help with the shedding process.
- Shaving is the only acceptable method of hair removal six weeks prior to starting treatment and during the whole treatment period. Do not shave the treated area if crusting is evident.
- Avoid contact sports or any other activity that could cause bruising of the treated area.
- You may bathe normally with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil, Cerave, Dove for sensitive skin etc. Treat the skin gently as if you have experienced a sun burn. Fragrance free moisturizer may be used in the treated area. Powder in the under arm area is recommended in the first 24 hours to prevent irritation from treatment.
- Makeup may be used immediately after treatment unless there is a burn/blister.
- Local anesthetic prior to laser treatment may increase the incidence of adverse effects, such as burns, erythema and blistering.
- To reduce the incidence of adverse effects, such as burns, erythema and blistering, do not treat sun-exposed areas of skin.
